The city hall of Gardelegen

The show- and department store was firstly mentioned in a document of the year 1241 and is situated in the middle of the historic old town in a triangular surface of the city hall.
The well-structured late-gothic front made of bricks, the arcades with star-shaped vault at the south side, the richly arched interiors, the “house husband tower“ with a double lantern and the coat of arms at the east and west side make the house to one of the buildings of the town that are worth seeing.

The Church St. Marien

The Church St. Marien is in ist origin a late-Roman construction of bricks. Architects of different epochs gave it the look of today.
The first smaller church was built around 1200. In the 13th century, the church was converted into a five-naves hallchurch.
1492, with the appointment of Bartholomäus Rieseberg as a pastor the reformation started. Rieseberg also made sure that the church got a renovation and a new organ.
The visit of the Church St.Marien is possible after making an appointment in the rectory at the Holzmarkt.

The Church St. Nicolai

The Church St. Nicolai is one of the nice old churches made of bricks. In its origin it was a Roman basilica. Around 1300 it was Gothically overbuilt and in the beginning of the 16th century it was provided with further extensions.
On March 15, 1945 the Church St. Nicolai was heavily damaged. Several saved pieces were brought to the Church St. Marien, for example the altar and the font.
Visits and “climbing up the tower” is possible after booking at the rectory.

The Gate of Salzwedel and the City Fortification

The Gate of Salzwedel is the only one of three city gates that is well-preserved. It was built in the 16th century and was an important part of the city fortification. The two mighty “Batterytowers”, which are in front of the gate, have a diameter of 9 to 18 meters.
In 1907 the gate was reconstructed by Prof. Dr. Otto Stiehl. That’s how for example the “staged gable” and the entry of the gate was carefully “imitated” after the old origins. From 1991 on a general renovation was carried out.
Today, four different clubs have their domicile here.
Of the Gate of Magdeburg and the Gate of Stendal and the city wall only parts have remained, which you can see and visit when you take a walk through the rampart-constructions.
A part of the city graben was also preserved, which also had the purpose of protecting against enemies in earlier times just like the city wall and the rampart-constructions.

The Roland of Gardelegen

Justice, civil pride and efficiency of manual workers and merchants – this is what the Roland stands as a symbol. The Roland of Gardelegen was firstly mentioned in 1450. Because of fires in the city hall he was damaged several times and he completely collapsed on November 7,1727.
On April 18, 2002 – exactly 275 years ago  - he was put up again.
An examplary collection campaign, initiated by the non-profit-making supporting club of manual work of the Altmark district Salzwedel e.V., made this possible.

Hospital St. Spiritus

The Great Hospital developed from a foundation of an aristocrat of Gardelegen, probably already before 1300. The Hospital was equipped for the accommodation of 10 old citizens who needed help. In the early 19th century the Hospital accommodated “unmarried frail citizen daughters. Today, different clubs are situated there and the state-school department has its domicile there.
