1196 - First documentary mention as castle and fixed place
around 1200 - The construction of the two churches "St. Marien" and "St. Nikolai".
around 1228 - Foundation of the Zisterzienser- convent in Neuendorf not far from Gardelegen
1241 - construction of a store and exhibition house (later it became the town hall)
1314 - award of the right of malt
1316 - The town acquired the Schulzenamt and therefore the "high cognisance"
1319 - The big hospital "St. Spiritus" was equipped with a beneficence.
1340 - the council of Gardelegen took over the patronage of the schools of the town.
1353 - Gardelegen becomes a member of the federation of the towns in the Altmark.
1358 - Gardelegen gets an invitation for the Hanseatic Day in Lübeck.
1488 -

conflict of the "Bierziese" with the elector caused by a randomised increase of the rate of taxes (ziese means tax)

1526 - Beginning of the rebuilding of the town hall after a fire
1539 - Bartholomäus Rieseberg (1492-1566) carried out the reformation in Gardelegen.
1546 - construction of the big town school at the Holzmarkt

construction of the city wall with the Magdeburger, Stendaler and Salzwedeler Tor is completed

1618/48 - destruction, epidemics of pestilence, fall of the number of inhabitants
1628 - the army of Pappenheims has been in Gardelegen during the 30-year-war

1668 - The chronicle of the town by Christophorus Schultze appeared.
1706 - the tower of the town hall was renewed.
1715 - Gardelegen becomes a brandenburgisch-preußische garrison town.
1727 - the Roland of Gardelegen collapsed.
1752 - Christoph August Tiedge (+ 1841) was born in Gardelegen
1767 - Wilhelm Bornemann (+1851) was born in Gardelegen
1771 - Gardelegen counted 2,471 "souls".
1806-13 - Gardelegen belonged to the kingdom of Westphalen.
1816 - The rural district Gardelegen was formed with 144 villages.
1841 - Introduction of the industry of buttons by Carl Koch (foundation of the factory of buttons )
1860 - Gardelegen is again garrison town with the help of disposer of the cabinet
1864 - Gardelegen has 6,023 inhabitants
1870 - Otto Reutter († 1931) was born in Gardelegen
1871 - opening of the railway-path Berlin -Gardelegen -Lehrte
1878 - a hospital was build up by the united federation of hospitals.
1890/91 - there were still five manual-worker-guilds
1910/11 - the town gets water pipes, canalisation and an electric power station (interurban central station)
1914/18 - rebuilding of the town hall
1927 - foundation of the "club for local history" in Gardelegen
1929 - establishment of a museum of local history; opening of the new fire brigade-depot
1931/32 - building of the new post office
as of 1933 - build-up and reestablishment of military constructions with residential buildings for the staff
as of 1939 - air base and base of paratroopers
1939-41 - new building of the hospital
3-15-1945 - bomb-attacks on Gardelegen, 52 dead, the church "St. Nikolai" and further buildings are been destroyed
04-13-1945 - 1016 concentration camp prisoners are been murdered in the field-barn "Isenschnibbe"
04-14-1945 - the town is handed over to the allies without any fights; 5 soviet troops take the town over
1960 - laying of the foundation stone for an asbestos- and cement factory
1970 - the swimming pool Gardelegen near Zienau can be used from that time on.
1974-84 - the development of apartment buildings made from prefabricated cement-slabs in the new building area "Schlüsselkorb"
1990 - first freely elected city council assemblies after the "Wende"; new foundation of business enterprises, associations
1994 - Gardelegen loses the status as a county seat and belongs to the district of Salzwedel from 7-1-1994 on; Gardelegen has 13,414 inhabitants
1990-96 - agile construction action in the town; residential areas, industry and business areas emerge
2002 - The town gets a new Roland.
