History / History of Town

The settlement Gardelegen was build approximately 1,000 years ago. Between 1200 and 1400 the settlement became a town. The so called Ackerbürgerstädtchen came into its historical bloom and got its nationwide glance between 1500 and 1630 because of the brewage and the export of a special herb drink ("Garlei-beer"). With the money of the beer (a tax on export) constructions that are still impressive were built in the 16th century. An example would be the city hall or the Salzwedeler Tor.

After the total recession of the once so important export and brewage of the beer (beginning of the 18th century) Gardelegen was a regional important "Ackerbürgerstädtchen", where craftsmen and tradesmen defined the life of the economy. Only between 1870 and 1910 the little local factories for buttons reached a certain nationwide importance. The settlement of other branches of industry or economy did not work in spite of a lot of tries.
Since the year 1725 (till1991) Gardelegen was used by the land lords as a garrison town, which gave the civic character of the place a certain stability and the brandenburgisch-preußisch consciousness of tradition was justified.
Gardelegen received a first modern infrastructure due to the long sight of several "Fathers of the town" between 1870 and 1910. Not until 1870 the town developed above the taken in area of settlement during the Middle Age (Old Town).
Between 1815 and 1994 Gardelegen has been the main town of an own and bigger administrative district. Gardelegen is since that time the most important town in the Altmark after Stendal and Salzwedel. The number of inhabitants of Gardelegen oscillate depending on the external and contemporary historical influences for about 150 years around the number 10,000.
