The
Church "St.Marien" |
|
The
Church "St. Marien” was actually a late-romantic
building made of bricks. Master builders from different
epochs created its current look. The first smaller church
was built around 1200. In the 13th century the church was
remodelled into a five-nave hall-church. In 1492 it was
the beginning of the reformations when Bartholomäus
Rieseberg became a pastor. Rieseberg took care that the
church would get repaired and that a new organ was bought.
You are able to visit the Church “St. Marien” after
making an appointment at the rectory at the Holzmarkt. [Telephone:

The
Church "St. Nikolai" |
|
The
Church “St. Nikolai” is one of the beautiful and old
northern Germanic brick-churches. It was once a Romanic
basilica. Around the year 1300 it was remodelled to the
gothic-style and in the beginning of the 16th century a
few annexes were added. On March 15 in 1945 the church was
badly damaged after a bomb attack. A few saved things were
brought to the Church \\St.Marlen", for example the
altar and the font. Sightseeing and climbing up the tower
is possible after making an appointment at the rectory . [Telephone:

The
Salzwedeler Tor and the town-fortification |
|
The
SaJzwedeler Tor is the only well-preserved of the 3 former
town gates. It was built in the 16th century and was an
important part of the town-fortification. The two mighty
"battery-towers" which are in front of the gate
have a diameter of 9 to 18 meters. In 1907 the gate was
reconstructed by Prof. Dr. Otto Stiehl. It was possible to
adjust the gate to old ideals, for example the
"Staffelgiebel" and the entry of the gate. From
the year 1991 on a general renovations took place. From
the Magdeburger and Stendaler Tor and the town city wall
you can on I y see ruins. You can visit those when you
take a walk in the park. One part of the “Stadtgraben”
which was also supposed to protect from enemies, just like
the city wall and the tree-wall. |

The Roland
of Gardelegen |
|
Justice,
pride and strength of the manufacturers and the merchants-
this is what the Roland stands for. The Roland of
Gardelegen was mentioned in 1450 for the first time. The
Roland was damaged several times because of fire in the
town hall; it was reconstructed but finally collapsed on
November 7 In 1727. On April 18 in 2002 -after 275 years
-the Roland was put up again. It was only possible because
of the "Förderverein of the manufacturers of the
Altmark-district Salzwedel e. V .", who started a
collection campaign. |

Hospital
St. Spiritus |
|
The
big hospital developed out of a foundation of an
aristocrat from Gardelegen, probably before 1300. The
hospital was able to take 10 old citizens who needed help.
In the early 19th century the hospital put up
“not-married and fragile middle-class daughters".
Today it is the residence of several associations and also
of the national school department. |
