History / Memorial Place

In the beginning of the year 1945, in April, several
evacuation-transportations (by train) of concentration camp prisoners from
several national socialist concentration camps (DORA-Nordhausen,
Neuengamme-Hamburg) were stopped at random near Gardelegen (Mieste,
Letzlingen).

Numerous of the deported concentration camp prisoners were summed up to
marching columns ("Marches of death"), which route finally ended in
Gardelegen.

On April 13 and 14 in 1945 numerous of those concentration camp prisoners became victim of a massacre in a field-barn of the manor Isenschnibbe on the outskirts.
In honour to the victims of the massacre in the "Isenschnibber Feldscheune", a special cemetery ("military cemetery") was built up by the US army in April 1945.

The cemetery is now centre of a memorial place, whose main features were created step-by-step between 1952 and 1971.
There are several recurring events every year where we recommemerate the victims of the massacre.
The memorial place “Isenschnibber Feldscheune” in Gardelegen is in sponsorship of the town Gardelegen. It is for free to enter the memorial place. You have to obtain the codes of conduct that are to be found on German cemeteries.

The event of the war crime in Gardelegen in April 1945 is still a matter of large and current scientific investigations.
